UNDER THE CLOUD Under the cloud, we gather wood To build a fire, sing it loud, life is good At the end of the working day Cloud forming like a bird of prey You’re like an actor Lost his place in a modern play Act it out, or turn the page In the end you’ll have to act your age Wings beating in your ears As they sweep the stage Under the cloud, we gather wood To build a fire, sing it loud, life is good He’s your cat, he’s all your rage Rogue tiger in a bamboo cage Pure fury burning gold in a gelded age Nothing new but the rising sun Beware of following anyone Put your back into the work to be done Under the cloud, we gather wood To build a fire, sing it loud, life is good

WHAT DO I SEE IN YOU? White gold of a winter sun Mares’ tails and waves of sand Cold blue of a winter sky Bright sails in the rising wind Driving my heart beyond Her rising in your eyes What do I see in you? What do I see in you? I see her, the one I love She comes and goes The way that I do What do I see in Dark glass of the swimming sea Standing as it walks to shore Wave after wave it comes White blaze of a winter sun Mirrored in a walking wave Your face when you come to me What do I see in you? What do I see in you? I see her, the one I love She comes and goes The way that I do Between you and the thought of her I walk a narrow strip of sand Fall stars climbing from the water Woodsmoke rising from the land You say you can give me more She calls me there, where lightning plays Like surf on a distant shore She draws me on and on She keeps me passing through Is she what I love in you? White gold in a winter sky Cold fire in a walking wave Is she my only love? What do I see in you? What do I see in you? I see her, the one I love She comes and goes The way that I do What do I see in you?

LOOKING BACK AT THE EARTH Looking back at the earth, I remember her face All the mornings I tried to see past the surface Watching her sleep and then watching her wake Into power and grace Even timbers and masts must remember their roots Though they lost them oceans ago Moaning, like forests or wooden flutes Sailor where do you stem from and where do you go? I hear songs in the wood, like the poet who heard How a tree bore the weight of his lord God on a cross-tree with roots in the earth And the earth transformed by a word Looking back at the earth, looking back at the earth Are we finding our place? Since we stood and looked up, we’ve been climbing toward space Longing for home, from the ends of the earth to the end of our race Someone’s crowing the dawn of a new age A millennium looms in the night And nobody sees that they’re setting the stage For their own darkest hovering fears to alight Not a soul in the streets of the capitals As they echo another alarm Empty clanging of halyards on flagpoles Heard in dreams as a call to arms Looking back at the earth, looking back at the earth Looking back at the earth, how we spit in her face Push the Amazon down, hold her tight in our arms race Cut ourselves off at the root from a life we can never replace Do you think what you hear is a song he sings That man high on the hilltop? It’s a wind that seeks out the hollow of things Like the heart of a man who will only look up Broken promises whistle around his head Tries his hand at bending the rainbow A thousand feet tall, now he’s one with it all Might as well bury him now Looking back at the earth, looking back at the earth Looking back at the earth from a walk in space At the end of my rope, a measure of grace In the dark of my heart all the peaces and wars Fall back into place I remember her face All the mornings I tried to see past the surface Watching her sleep and watching her wake Into power and grace

WALKING INTO THE BLUE You may miss what you’ll be giving up Living closer to the bone But that’s always when I’ve seen you at your best No one hears your footsteps As you make your way alone But they echo in the thunder in the west Walking into the blue Write it down in songs or vapor trails Write it down in piles of stone History will say what it will say There’s no market now for prophecy With this party going on But it’s getting hard to look the other way When the world hangs on the words of childish men And the children hang themselves For fear of growing up, or going up in smoke, or down in war With everything they want And nothing to live for Walking into the blue You know courage, faith, and brotherhood Are never right in style But they’re right when trouble puts you to the test Be strong for one another’s good, walk another mile And don’t fear the sound of thunder in the west Walking into the blue
5.
JUST ANOTHER THIRD WORLD WAR You can hear them fight up and down the neighborhood The old row is shaking from the row You could call the law, but it won't do you any good This is just the way that things are now Should you take a side, stand above, or understand? They don't talk your language anyway If you could decide, you'd find you're wrong again Win or lose, you know it doesn't pay Just another third world war There is a right side, and nobody's on it Carve our names in the hide of the planet Don't know what we want, but man, do we want it All these tiny wars that you'll soon forget about Get their shining moment in the news They go on beyond the lives they're putting out They're like torches groping for a fuse
6.
IT’LL NEVER COME You say you can’t go on But I know you, you love the game Maybe you’ve never tried Or tried too hard, it’s all the same If you look and don’t touch If you want too much If you’re sad and lonesome It’ll never come Wherever love comes from It waits 'til you say It’ll never come Hear the kettle boiling You know what to do Hide from trouble It’ll come to you Supper’s on the table If you have to run If you get too hungry Supper never comes It’s just like driving home Just settle down And watch it go Remember how it feels Behind the wheel Just take it slow Waiting for the kingdom Waiting for the bomb If everybody’s waiting Will it ever come? It’s when your back is turned Your ship comes in Don’t miss the tide Remember how it feels Behind the wheel Enjoy the ride

STRANDED IN THE LAND OF YOUR DREAMS Where are you off to? Are you living inside your head? You're gonna have to move your feet Get you some fresh air Or you may as well go to bed Nothing to find there Hit the street or you'll be Stranded in the land of your dreams Stranded in the land of your dreams Didn't she tell you She remembered you from before Wasn't her laughter warm and kind? After you fell you Started dreaming of something more Too bad it's only In your mind and you are Stranded in the land of your dreams Stranded in the land of your dreams Over every hill lie seven cities of gold Or so I'm told, and so it seems You can overlook a treasure under your nose That's the way it goes, land of your dreams Flying those crossbones Like a make-believe buccaneer Take off your headphones, join a band Napoleon Solo Get real getting your ass in gear Don't want to be a nowhere man forever Stranded in the land of your dreams, of your dreams Stranded in the land of your dreams Over every hill lie seven cities of gold Or so I'm told, and so it seems You can overlook a treasure under your nose That's the way it goes, land of your dreams

THE ONE IN THE BACK OF MY MIND There are a few women I always will miss One for her laughter and one for her kiss One for her patience, one for her spark Flashing of eyes like a river in moonlight Flashing of eyes in the dark However it ended with others I’ve met You are the one I may always regret Losing, or leaving, and not knowing why And you knew no better than I I’ve tried and I’ve tried to put you behind The farthest you’ve gone is the back of my mind Whoever it is I’m hoping to find You are the one in the back of my mind I thought that I’d taken the lay of the land But it didn’t conform to the life I had planned It’s hard, when you’re younger, to know where you are On the grass, by the river, as the summer flowed by In the lap of the world and with you by my side Like a fool, I wished on a star I tried and I tried to put you behind Now you’re the one in the back of my mind Whoever it is I’m hoping to find You are the one in the back of my mind I must like the feeling of finding you there But it’s no good for her, and it’s not really fair It’s more than a little like being alone I could live in the past, but it wouldn’t be honest Stay there, wherever you’ve gone I’ve tried and I’ve tried to put you behind The farthest you’ve gone is the back of my mind Whoever it is I’m hoping to find You are the one in the back of my mind

FLIRTING WITH DISASTER I can see what’s on your mind And I can’t pretend the same thing hasn’t taken hold of mine But I’ve seen it all before Seen the way she cuts 'em down and keeps 'em coming back for more If you know what’s good for you You’ll walk right past her She may be looking right at you But she’s flirting with disaster Flirting with disaster Flirting with disaster too Every man thinks he’s the first Every man another Adam at the mercy of his thirst On the eve of his demise When the downfall of his Eve is making more than spirits rise If you know what’s good for you You’ll walk right past her She may be looking right at you But she’s flirting with disaster Flirting with disaster Flirting with disaster too

about

These tracks, recorded mostly in the 1980s, received good reviews from the few music critics who heard them. But the album was never picked up by a "real" record company and never properly released. No time like the present. Here it is, fixed and mixed, with new vocal and guitar tracks on some songs and, in one case, a completely new set of lyrics. Play it loud, life is good!

about

Patrick Regan Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

A songwriter and singer, I'm handy enough to be a one-man band but lucky enough to rope in great collaborators: Andy Goessling, Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks, John Andrews, Shannon Anderson, and more.

This is one place I'm preserving and publishing the best of my songs. Look for new releases here throughout 2024.
